KANKANAL DLMS to LoRaWAN AMR Reader
Plug-and-play DLMS/COSEM to LoRaWAN converter for automatic meter reading, bringing existing energy meters into the KANKANAL DeviceBoard AMI platform.
Product Overview
The KANKANAL DLMS to LoRaWAN AMR Reader is a compact edge device that connects to existing DLMS/COSEM-based electricity meters and forwards meter data over LoRaWAN. It enables utilities and ESCOs to modernise legacy metering infrastructure without replacing meters, providing secure, long-range wireless communication into KANKANAL DeviceBoard for billing, analytics and grid operations.
1. DLMS/COSEM to LoRaWAN Protocol Conversion
- Native support for DLMS/COSEM application layer used by modern electronic energy meters.
- Fetches billing data, instantaneous values, load profiles and event logs from meters.
- Maps DLMS OBIS codes into compact LoRaWAN payloads, optimised for low bandwidth.
- Configurable reading profiles for basic, extended and on-demand data sets.
- Designed for firmware-upgradeable DLMS profiles as utilities evolve.
2. Flexible Interfaces to Existing Meters
- Supports multiple meter ports:
- Optical port (IR probe) for front-panel meter reading.
- RS-485 / UART for terminal-block connections.
- Option for M-Bus or custom utility interfaces (variant-dependent).
- Compatible with single-phase and three-phase DLMS meters from multiple vendors.
- Non-invasive install – no need to open the meter measurement chamber.
- Suitable for both indoor meter rooms and outdoor cabinets (with appropriate enclosure rating).
3. Long-Range LoRaWAN Connectivity
- Built-in LoRaWAN Class A/Class C radio for long-range, low-power communication.
- Supports regional bands (EU868, IN865, AS923, AU915, US915 and others as required).
- Deep indoor penetration with high receiver sensitivity and optimised spreading factors.
- Works seamlessly with KANKANAL Indoor, Outdoor and Solar LoRaWAN Gateways.
- Suited for dense urban deployments, villages and rural feeder lines.
4. Edge Intelligence & Reading Profiles
- Configurable reading schedules (e.g., 15 min, 1 hr, 4 hr, daily billing read).
- Stores multiple recent reads locally for resilience in case of network outage.
- Change-of-value and threshold-based reporting to reduce airtime and battery usage.
- Supports on-demand reads from DeviceBoard for troubleshooting or special billing.
- Optional local preprocessing such as demand calculation, max-demand windowing and TOU slot mapping.
5. Power Options & Easy Installation
- Powered from:
- Meter auxiliary supply (e.g., 24 VDC or 230 VAC via adaptor), or
- Long-life lithium battery for pure retrofit in locations without auxiliary power.
- DIN-rail, wall-mount or meter-cabinet mounting options.
- Compact housing designed to fit inside standard meter boxes and feeder pillars.
- LED indicators for power, LoRaWAN join status and meter communication.
6. Security & Utility-Grade Reliability
- Supports DLMS security mechanisms (application association, password or key-based access, as per meter configuration).
- End-to-end LoRaWAN security with AES-128 encryption (NwkSKey/AppSKey).
- Secure boot and signed firmware to prevent unauthorised modifications (model-dependent).
- Wide operating temperature range designed for meter rooms and outdoor cabinets.
- Optional tamper inputs or events to indicate cabinet opening or power tampering.
7. DeviceBoard & Utility System Integration
- Tight integration with KANKANAL DeviceBoard for:
- Meter dashboards (per feeder, transformer, zone, consumer segment).
- Load-profile visualization and power-quality analytics.
- Alerting on non-communication, tamper flags, over-load, voltage issues.
- Northbound APIs (REST/MQTT/CSV exports) for integration with:
- Billing & CIS / ERP systems,
- Outage management & crew dispatch tools,
- Energy-trading and settlement platforms.
- Supports multi-tenant and multi-discom deployments through DeviceBoard.
8. Typical Deployment Scenarios
- Utility AMR / AMI: rapid rollout of remote reading for existing DLMS meters without replacing hardware.
- Industrial & Commercial Complexes: sub-metering of factories, malls, IT parks and campuses.
- Solar & Renewable Sites: energy generation and export metering at remote plants.
- Smart Cities & Townships: feeder and distribution-transformer monitoring, common-area meters.
- ESCO & Energy Audits: temporary or permanent monitoring of high-value customers and loads.
9. Key Advantages
- Fast modernisation of legacy DLMS meters into a LoRaWAN-based AMI network.
- No meter replacement – protects existing investments and avoids regulatory re-approval.
- Utility-grade security from meter to DeviceBoard.
- Scales easily from pilot feeders to full-city deployments.
- Part of the KANKANAL ecosystem with gateways, DeviceBoard Cloud and utility ERP integration.
